Garmin Forerunner 745, 955 LTE, Fenix 6 Sport & Edge 1030 Plus expected in 2020

Garmin has been busing this year with a flurry of launches in the last half with the Fenix 6 in August and multiple watches at IFA including the Venu.

Things look set to continue, with some very early speculation via the5krunner with a list of devices that are due to launch which includes:

• Garmin Forerunner 745
• Garmin Forerunner 955
• Garmin 955 LTE
• Garmin Index Scale 2
• Garmin Edge 1030 Plus
• Garmin Edge 130 Plus
• Garmin Enduro MTB
• Garmin Quatix 6 (based on Fenix 6)
• Garmin Fenix 6S SPORT 
• Garmin Fenix 6 SPORT 
• Garmin Fenix 6 SOLAR 
• Garmin Vector AIR

No major details have been revealed, and some of the products being launched could have guessed from the Garmin release schedule.

Forerunner Watches

The Forerunner 735xt is the last device waiting for an upgrade in the Garmin line-up and this is likely to be the first device that gets announced in 2020.

This could then be followed up by a new Forerunner 955 which may have an LTE variant. This was rumoured with the Fenix 6 but never occurred, so I wouldn’t get my hope up yet.

Garmin Fenix 6 Sport, Solar & 7

This is perhaps one to not get overly excited about, it is claimed that there could be a Sport variant of the Fenix 6, but what that means remains uncertain. Garmin already has three different sizes, Pro, Sapphire, and Titanium models plus the Solar model. Some models even have different straps for a premium price. It can get a little confusing when choosing. It is unlikely a Sport model will add much in the way of features but instead be more design orientated.

What is rumoured is the possibility of the Solar technology tricking down to the mid-sized 47mm model which seems to make sense.

With the Fenix 6 out, people have inevitably started talking about the Fenix 7, however, this is unlikely to happen until 2021.

Edge Cycling Computers

With the Edge 1030 being announced back in 2017, and many of the Edge computers being updated this year, it is now expected that the flagship model will get some love.

Rumours have floated around about the Garmin Edge 1040 but recently the Edge 1030 received a large firmware upgrade which helped bring it in line with the current crop of devices, which put doubt how soon it might launch.

It now looks like this will be the Edge 1030 Plus which you can probably expect it earlier on in the year to make the most of the cycling season. What this might include is unknown as of yet but you can probably expect some design changes including a slimmer form factor and improve screen size/brightness. I wouldn’t say no to some LTE functionality in my bike computer, its bigger battery is better suited to it than a watch, and maps and crash detection are more useful on a device like this than a watch in my opinion.

Others

Garmin Index Scale 2 – I never used the original Index Scale, but I am a fan of smart scales. The current scale is more expensive and poorly reviewed compared to competing options from Withings and FitBit so this is an area that Garmin could do with improving. The existing one tracks all the normal stuff like fat, water muscle, via the questionable electro impedance method, so there is not much to add. The Withings Cardio measures heart rate too, so it could be possible Garmin try some Firstbeat magic with a new set of scales.

Garmin Quatix 6 – This is due to be upgraded to the Fenix 6 platform and is a marine orientated watch.

Garmin Enduro MTB – It is expected that this could be a ruggedised version of one of the edge devices.
