Fitbit Versa 2 vs Misfit Vapor X vs Garmin Vivoactive 4 – Which will be the best fitness smartwatch at IFA 2019?

It looks like the wearables hall will be buzzing with activity at IFA this year based the rumours and leaks that have been revealed recently.

The Misfit Vapor X is the only confirmed watch, and they are owned by the Fossil Group so it should be at the show this year.

Most companies will be announcing their products at the show, so we can’t know for certain what will be there. The recent barrage of Garmin leaks would indicate that the Vivoactive 4 is very likely to arrive, and maybe a new line called the Venu.

The Fitbit Versa 2 has had a lot of credible leaks including product and retail packaging photos. So it is definitely launching soon, and Fitbit has a nice big booth next door to Fossil at IFA.

Misfit Vapor X

The Vapor X smartwatch which joins a small number of devices that have the newest Snapdragon Wear 3100 SoC from Qualcomm.

This affordable and attractive watch has a circular 1.19-inch AMOLED screen sits on top with 328ppi and 42mm dial. The SD31000 is then paired up with 4GB of internal storage and 512MB of RAM. The watch supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC. It can be paired with phones running at least Android 4.4 or iOS 10.

With it being a WearOS watch, there are plenty of apps to make this work how you want. With the Strava app, this should work well for people interested in fitness, but who don’t need the feature set that Garmin offers.

It is also swim-proof in shallow water, so if you are feeling daring you may be able to track a triathlon.

Currently, the watch goes for $199 it will probably go up to its original price of $279 soon enough. Sadly this offer does not extend to the UK

Fitbit Versa 2

Official images of the Fitbit Versa 2 and its retail packaging have been leaked online, so I would be very surprised if it is not at IFA.

The Versa has been a popular model for Fitbit, so no surprise they want to capitalise on it more.

The Versa 2 upgrades the screen to an OLED display and 2.5D curved glass on top. It is believed that it will continue to offer a 4-day battery life, something that WearOS can not offer.

It will also come with built-in storage to store up to 300 songs, which you can listen to using Bluetooth headphones.

For fitness it will continue to track your steps, floors climbed, sleep tracking and 24 / 7 heart rate monitoring.

Disappointingly, it appears that they have still omitted a GPS chip from this so it is still not a great choice for any semi-serious athlete. This will mean the rather ugly Ionic is the only GPS enabled Fitbit device and that was launched 2 years ago.

The Fitbit Versa 2 will also come with more than 18 exercise modes, as well as sleep tracking and heart rate monitoring features. The smartwatch will also support Fitbit Pay, which allows purchases to be made from the device through linked credit and debit cards.

Garmin Vivoactive 4

Several leaks have come out for Garmin, though less credible than the Fitbit information.

There have been a lot of rumours that Garmin may adopt an AMOLED display and a recent leak that indicated the existence of the Garmin Venu could very well be an AMOLED based watch.

One of the big selling points of Garmin is the exceptional battery life so a massive upgrade to a display would contradict this.

Not much else is known about the Vivoactive 4, it will almost certainly continue to use the same ecosystem we have on other Garmin watches, which means this will be the least smartwatch of the three. It should, however, have NFC payments, and music streaming. It is also likely to integrate a few of the new Firstbeat features that we have seen on the new Forerunner 245 & 945, as well as possibly upgrading the HRM to the new Elevate optical HRM sensor.
