I don’t seem to cover Tesla products much but Elon Musks latest announcement sounds amazing to me.
As part of the even where Elon Musk updated Powerwall and Powerpack products he also announced a new form of solar panelling; glass slate solar panels, that replace your entire roof.
The solar panels are actually made by Solar City, but Elon Musk controls are a large part of this and is run by 2 of his cousins. The tiles eliminate the need for traditional panels
Tesla’s glass solar roof tiles would look far better than any similar product, Musk said. They can be manufactured in a range of styles, which were demonstrated on the rooftops on the set.
Tesla gave little detail on cost, except to say that the cost of the roof would be less than a conventional roof plus solar. The product will appeal to home builders and those looking to replace their roofs, Musk said, adding that the shingles would be more durable and have better insulation qualities than conventional roofing.
SolarCity co-founder Peter Rive, Musk’s cousin, said the solar roofs could easily have a 5% share of the new roof market in a year or two.
While I hope I don’t need to replace my roof anytime soon, it would be amazing if when I did I could use solar tiles.
In addition to the solar tiles, he announced the latest Tesla Powerwall 2 with 14kWh of storage and a peak output of 7kW for $5,500 and also announced the commercial product Powerpack 2 with 210kWh storage with a peak output of 50kW.
