Android Nougat has now officially been launched on Google devices and the over the air rollout should slowly be happening now.

Unfortunately, the Nexus 4 and 7 will not be receiving the new update.

If you are too impatient you can manually install it via one of the images, or an easier method is to sign up to the Google Beta program, where you will be able to get it immediately via OTA. It is recommended that you un-enrol after you have installed it though, to avoid getting future early betas. The build number should be NRD90M.

You can sign up to the program here: https://www.google.com/android/beta

I have been using the final version for the past day or so, and everything is running great. There isn't really that much visual change, as Google is separating a lot of the functionality into Apps rather than the core software. The main things I have noticed, and enjoy are:

  • The new notification system – more information in the notification bar, replies directly from notifications and bundled notifications allowing you to view more info without having to open the app.
  • Quick Tap – A small but handy feature, allowing you to double tap on the switch button and you jump back to the last app.

There is also multi window but I don’t/haven’t used it much.

The doze feature is possibly the most important none visible change, which is supposed to make the battery work a lot better. Only time will tell regarding this, though.
