Over the years there have been many iconic gaming apps out there with the likes of Tetris and Angry Birds finding their way into the gaming hall of fame.
And 2016 has been another great year for the mobile gaming revolution with a string of massive titles that show that, whether it’s a complex army strategy game or even a simple online lotto, there’s no end to the fun that we can have on our mobiles.
The year’s biggest mobile gaming hit has to be Pokémon Go. Since it was launched in July, it’s been downloaded more than 500 million times, set new standards for augmented reality gaming, and caused many healthy warnings to be issued which is surely a big sign of success!
These impressive figures look to eclipse the phenomenal likes of Minecraft: Pocket Edition whose world-building adventures have kept the title near the top of the app charts throughout the whole of 2016. And who would have guessed that Plague Inc’s pandemic-producing hit would continue to grow in popularity four years after its initial release?
Even traditional gambling games have found a new breath of life in the current mobile gaming environment, with the likes of Coral’s online lotto proving to be massive in the UK thanks to the way that it allows players to participate in a huge selection of lucrative lotteries from around the world.
And the Trenches II game offers a world-conquest of a different kind by allowing you to take charge of British, French, German or Russian armies in a great little military strategy game, whilst Bloons TD 5 has successfully continued the tower defence trend by allowing two-player cooperative play that really ramps up the fun.
The sporting world has had many great gaming apps with the likes of the FIFA 17 mobile game offering a massive range of authentic leagues, teams and players to control from your smartphone. And whilst it might not offer quite as much complexity, the Flip Diving game gave us all the chance to emulate some of the great dives of the Olympics, but from castles, trees and trampolines!
But for pure adrenaline it’s hard to beat the high-octane thrills of CSR Racing 2 that put you in charge of your own drag racer, whilst the basic but addictive Geometry Dash showed us that, just like online lotto, the simplest games are often the best!
