Microsoft Kin : Project “Pink” incoming

Posted by skin On April - 15 - 2010

We spoke a month or so ago and got a little bit excited about the prospect of a Microsoft phone which I was hoping was going to be a true iPhone beater sporting the new Windows Mobile 7. Originally the rumours were flying about that the phone development was called project “Pink”. Well Microsoft has now announced that Project “Pink” will now be coming this Autumn to Vodafone but has been renamed as Kin but it doesn’t appear that the all singing all dancing Windows 7 Phone is the Kin. Maybe it’s the start of things to come.

Both the Kin 1 and Kin 2 are touchscreen phones with slide out QWERTY keyboards. The main emphasis on these phones is social networking and although the phones aren’t sporting Microsoft’s new Windows Mobile 7 or even 6.5 Microsoft has developed another OS that the KIN can call its own, designed to complement it's social networking abilities.

Full specs are a little thin but what we do know is the Kin 1 is the smaller of the two and has a 5MP camera whilst the Kin 2 is slightly bigger but has a better 8MP camera, larger storage capacity and the ability to take videos at HD quality. Both will also pack the HD software, which is great and certainly more than capable of challenging the iPhone’s music abilities.

The software features of both phones sound clever to it can collate all your favourite people’s statuses, messages and pictures all into one place called the Kin Loop. Also if you want to share yours, there’s the Kin Spot. Drag photos, messages and your status updates into it and then choose who you want to distribute them to. Then there’s the Kin Studio. Anything and everything you create on the phone can be sent to the cloud. This can then be accessed in any web browser and shared again to whoever you like.

Zune HD hitting the States in September

Posted by skin On August - 12 - 2009

September 15th. Mark it in your diaries. Thats the date some leaked packaging was bearing. It’s the PMP we’re all waiting for(if you’re one of these that don’t like Apple especially). Piece by piece fanboys have tried to source the clues and got Microsoft to spill the proverbial beans.

The toting PMP looks nice. It’s specs sound nice, c’mon you know it cant disappoint can it? Well unfortunately the September 15th date is only for the States and Microsoft are keeping quiet as to when us Brits will get a go of it and we havent even got the first which was realeased nearly 3 years ago and has had several models since then too.

Also there’s still no news on a price but a lot of rumours are flying round the £150 mark. C’mon Microsoft pull your finger out and let us limeys in.

Microsoft have announce its HD will be powered by ’s chipset giving the PMP brilliant visuals, great performance and better battery life which we all know is a massice problem when playing video on a PMP. ’s can give 1080p output on HDMI. The itself will only do 720p playback but if its powered by the , this will give the great rendering capabilities and it will be interesting to see how the UI can get the full potential of it.

Microsoft has kept quiet on the full specifications of the HD but on an official Insider Podcast, presenter Matt Akers said the was “like a mini laptop in your hand” after confirming that it would indeed use the . Still waiting for a UK release date and price…….. can’t wait!!

Paul Thurrott, a Microsoft guru, has said the ZuneHD is slated to ship September 5, 2009. Unfortunately in his blog post he has quoted CNET saying that:

The Zune HD, which will be available in the U.S. only starting this fall

So it looks like the HD may not be getting an international release after all.

Zune HD hands-on by Engadget

Posted by James On May - 29 - 2009

Engadget have been lucky enough to get some hands on time with the HD following the exclusive demo that Steve Ballmer carried out.

The device is only a pre-production model however Engadget didn't notice a single hiccup while jumping through menus or playing back HD video.

They found the screen to be absolutely stunning with colours being bright, edges crisp, and text clear.

The UI is an extension of the existing interface, but way tricked out in this version, with lots of flipping images, scaling text, smooth scrolling, and an extreme emphasis on simple visual navigation.

However the specs do conform to the leaked specifications a few weeks ago which includes:

  • HD Radio.
  • Web Browser.

  • Released, early fall.
  • International Release
  • Home AV packs, Car packs, Charge packs.

Microsoft are getting rind of the squircle in favour a full multitouch device and they have suggested that some new touch-friendly apps and games would be released.

The device will boast an IE-based, customized browser, but little else was said in the way of software.

integration is coming to the Xbox and Xbox Live, as the marketplace will step in to replace the current Live video resources, expanding the library and offering all kinds of new perks.
