New Kindle Fire HDX 7

As it is coming up to Christmas season Amazon have refreshed their line-up of Kindles. This year brings a brand new release in the form of the Kindle Fire HDX in both 7”. and 8.9” versions, and both sport a new angular body.

Both tablets have impressive screen resolutions with pixel densities rated at 323 pixels per inch (1,920 x 1,200) and 339 ppi (2,560 x 1,600), respectively. Previously the density was 221 ppi and 254 ppi while the iPad 3 is 254.  Interestingly there is also a new dynamic image contrast feature which works by shifting the display’s contrast, rather than brightness, to compensate for external changes in lighting.

The 7 inch version has just one front facing camera, while its larger brother has  two including an 8-megapixel that is capable of shooting 1080p.

Both versions feature a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM, double lasts years RAM.

Just like in previous edditions this is a heavily modified version of Android, using what Amazon call Fire OS.

Interestingly neither devices have an HDMI our, nor do they stream content directly to your TV. Instead they rely on secondary devices such as PlayStation 3 and 4 and Samsung smart TVs to stream content from the cloud and then use the device as a secondary screen.

Both versions are available to pre-order in America and will cost $229 and $379 with an additional $100 to each if you want 4G
