Amazon Fire Phone Officially Announced
Amazon have finally announced their first entry into the mobile phone ecosystem, the Amazon Fire. A lot of the details of this phone have been leaked over the past few months already, so most of it won’t come as a surprise to you!
The phone is made out of machined aluminium and has a 4.7-inch LCD HD display and has a quad-core 2.2 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM. Camera-wise, there’s a 13-megapixel shooter on the back with image stabilisation. The camera can be launched within a single click, even from the lockscreen, and the phone comes with unlimited photo storage on Amazon Cloud.
The phone comes with dual stereo speakers with virtual surround sound provided by Dolby as well as tangle free ear buds.
Just as the leaks suggested, the phone has a 3D element called dynamic perspective. The phone will adjust the image based on your gaze which will create a hologram like effect. It does this by using 4 front facing cameras. We are not sold on this idea at all, and LGs attempt at a 3D phone with the Optimus 3D was not all that successful, but we will reserve judgement until reviews are out.
The screen displays at 590 nits of brightness, and has a circular polarizer so you can look at it outside with sunglasses from any angle.
Finally the phone will have a feature called Firefly built into it which uses the phones cameras to identify over 100 million different objects such as DVDs, phone numbers, QR codes, CDs, URLs, games and bar codes. This will be then used to automatically look up info on the item and more importantly allow you to buy it if it is on Amazon.
Overall we think the specification is a little lackluster, so it comes as a big surprise that the pricing is not aiming at the mid/low end of the market. Only US pricing is currently available and it will be availabe in the for $199 (32GB) or $299 (64GB) on a two year contract or $650-$749 without a contract. $650 is about £400 but we typically pay more with VAT, importing etc, so we would expect it to be £500 in the UK for the 32GB model.
UK availability is expected to be in 6 months time.
