Samsung develops 4Gb chip promising 32GB DDR3 memory modules

Posted by James On January - 30 - 2009

Samsung like to develop a lot of world firsts and this time it is the world's first 4Gb (bit) DDR3 DRAM PC that will be capable of making 32GB (Byte) DIMM modules. Sweet Jesus that would mean that my PC could have 128GBs of ram! Not that many applications could make the most of that, but at least it could give you some bragging rights.

The new chips use the 50-nm fabrication process compared to the 90nm process of older generations, this allows the new chips consume 40% less power than previous DD3 memory modules.

Samsung wont be releasing the 32GB chips straight away but plan to roll out 16GB versions for servers, 8GB DDR3 DIMMs for desktops, and 8GB SO-DIMMs for laptops.

Exactly when and for how much is still a bit of a mystery.

A forum thread from Unifiction believes it maybe a viral campaign for Singularity, a new video game from Activision.

The video from YourTube and a Singularity are after the jump.

Orange launching PAYG BlackBerry 8120

Posted by James On January - 29 - 2009

8120orange thumb Orange launching PAYG BlackBerry 8120 Apparently Orange UK is going to be the first carrier in Europe to launch a BlackBerry device on a Pay As You Go service.

It will be an exclusive indigo colour that will sell for £145. There is no word on how the pricing will work as data access is quite an important aspect of BlackBerry's and the current Orange PAYG plans don't include data (apart from Dolphin where you get free access to Facebook). BGR stated the monthly fee is £5/month though I am unsure if they mean minimum top up or if that's the fee for data per month.

Windows Mobile 6.5 Leaked

11 12 08winmo65c thumb Windows Mobile 6.5 Leaked Neowin (via Wmpoweruser) are reporting that the first ROM has leaked and is available for Blue Angel (O2 XDA IIs, Qtek 9090, T-Mobile MDA III) devices. Apparently the ROM is only beta so it is likely to be missing a few features.

The rom appears to be publicly available via XDA-developers:

features include:

  • MSTOUCH(UPDATE)
  • TouchRecognizer
  • Touch LockScreen
  • IE6[IE Mobile8.12Pro]2009 Only for 6.5
  • CMHome For WM6.5PRO
  • Live For WM6.5

Microsoft are set to unveil WM 6.5 next month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Microsoft are also developing Windows Mobile 7 and this is expected for  release in the second half of this year. However it has already been delayed and was planned for release the first quarter of this year. I am sure we will see a few more delays between now and the planned release date.

I have previously mentioned (several times) that I was disappointed with Windows Mobile 5 and version 6 as I found them both very buggy with frequent crashes requiring software or worse hardware resets. I have not tried 6.1 but I do hope the new versions improve a lot. I like to see a bit of competition between manufactures and this year does look good for smartphones.

A video of running on BA is after the jump.

The tests include visiting the most popular websites such as the BBC, Ebay, Bebo and Google, as well as a 90-second YouTube clip, a 90-second 512Kbps streaming video as well as SMTP and IMAP based e-mail services.

T-Mobile came top in the web-browsing experience, on average 35% faster than the closest competitor, fastest for sending and receiving e-mail with attachments, and had the best upload speeds, 59% faster than the next competitor. T-Mobile were beaten to number one on download speed however, coming second with an average of 1 Mbps, with the fastest coming just shy of 1.5 Mbps.
