Sony sells VAIO PC business

It is a sad day for some, Sony has finally sold its VAIO PC and laptop arm to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), with the final deal set to be done by the end of March 2014. Sony says there has been a drop in demand for its PCs and had little to show at CES this year.

The company says it’s no longer designing and developing PC products, while manufacturing and sales will wrap up after the company’s final VAIO range goes on sale globally.

Sony will now be shifting its focus to smartphones and tablets which have seen significant profit improvements for them in 2013.

Unfortunately it will mean a cut of 5,000 jobs worldwide (1,500 in Japan) by the end of the 2014 fiscal year, with he new company only hiring 250 – 300 of the Sony employees.

Sony has been losing money a lot over the recent years, with the recent projected loss being $1.1 billion so it looks like this sale was inevitable.
